Berkeley studentz outrage police with demand to honour cop killer

Students at UC Berkeley caused quite a stir this month with their demands that a building on campus be renamed for Assata Shakur, the former black activist convicted of killing a New Jersey State Trooper 40 years ago.

The request prompted a petition by a police organization imploring the university not to heed the request saying that the former Black Panther Party member is “nothing more than a cold-blooded murderer.”

Saying that they feel isolated and oppressed, members of the Black Students Union delivered a letter to Chancellor Nicholas Dirks with several demands that included the hiring of more black staff members, the creation of an African American student resource center and the controversial appeal to change the name of Barrows Hall to “Assata Shakur Hall.”
